Why Most Hospital Birth Classes Fall Short

(and What You Deserve Instead)

When you're planning a hospital birth, one of the first things people tell you is, "Make sure to take the hospital class!" And honestly? That’s not bad advice. But it’s not complete advice either.

Hospital birth classes are a great starting point—but they often skip over the deeper education that actually helps you feel confident, informed, and in control during birth.

Let’s break it down.

What Hospital Classes Do Well

Let’s give hospital birth classes some credit: they do serve a purpose.

Most include basics like:

  • Recognizing the signs of labor

  • Breathing and relaxation techniques

  • What to pack in your hospital bag

  • A general overview of hospital policies and procedures

These classes are designed to familiarize you with the hospital’s expectations and routines. And while that information is helpful, it's also a bit one-sided.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

They prepare you to be a patient—not a decision-maker.

You walk away with tips on how to "be a good guest" in the hospital setting, but little guidance on how to stay rooted in your rights, your preferences, or your power.

What They’re Missing

Here’s where most hospital classes fall short: they leave out the parts that actually help you advocate for yourself.

Things like:

  • Understanding your rights as a birthing person

  • How to navigate interventions and know your options

  • When and how to ask questions or say no

  • The difference between informed consent and quiet compliance

  • Options for non-medical pain relief, movement, and comfort

These topics are crucial—especially if you want a birth experience that feels centered on you, not just the hospital’s routine.

And that’s exactly why I created the Know Your Birth Rights Guide—a free resource to help you fill in those missing pieces and walk into your birth feeling clear, calm, and empowered.
