Insurance-Covered Doula Support:

How It Works

Your insurance may cover doula support, and you get to choose how to use it.

Every doula and agency that accept insurance structures their care a little differently, so this page explains exactly how coverage works at Blooming Families and helps you pick the plan that fits what you need most.

What insurance typically covers

Most plans we work with cover:

  • 8 flexible visits, used during pregnancy or after baby arrives

  • Labor and birth support

  • 2 extended postpartum visits

Your exact coverage depends on your plan. We verify it for you before you sign anything.

Your three support plans

Birth-Focused Birth + Postpartum Postpartum-Only
Best for Families who want the most preparation for labor Families who want a doula at the birth and help afterward Families who mainly want hands-on help at home
Prenatal visits 6 4 None
Labor and birth support Yes, plus up to 3 hours after birth Yes, plus up to 3 hours after birth No
Postpartum flexible visits 2, 1 to 2 hours each 4, 1 to 2 hours each 8, up to 3 hours each
Extended postpartum visits (up to 3 hours of support per visit) 1 1 2

Your coverage includes one set of visits per pregnancy, and you choose how to divide them. Each plan below is a different way to use your visits. The more support you want at birth, the more visits go toward pregnancy; the more you want after baby arrives, the more go toward postpartum.

With birth support, one of your extended postpartum visits covers the time your doula stays with you after birth. She stays up to 3 hours to make sure you and baby are settled and doing well.

Why birth support includes prenatal visits

Birth support is much more than the birth itself. Your doula is on call for about four weeks around your due date. During that time, she:

  • Keeps her schedule open and takes on very few other clients

  • Doesn't travel or take vacations

  • Keeps you on emergency bypass so she can reach you within about 2 hours, day or night

  • Stays with you through labor, which can last many hours or even several days

Prenatal visits matter too. They give you time to get to know and trust your doula, and they help her learn how to support you best during labor. That's why birth plans include at least 4 prenatal visits, ideally completed before 38 weeks.

Postpartum-only support has no on-call period. Because your doula's time is fully scheduled, she can give you longer visits of up to 3 hours each.

  • What counts as a visit: prenatal visits can be anything from a 15-minute phone call to an hour-long visit in person or by video.

  • Overnight support: two visits can be combined for one overnight. Insurance allows only one billable visit per day, so overnights can't be on back-to-back nights.

  • All visits get scheduled: when you choose a plan, we plan to use every visit in it. Your doula will work with you to find times that fit your life.

  • Postpartum timing: postpartum visits are best used within the first 8 to 12 weeks. We can't guarantee availability after 12 weeks.

  • Late in pregnancy? We generally don't begin birth support after 37 weeks, but postpartum-only support is still available.

Good to know

  • You mainly want help after baby arrives: choose Postpartum-Only. It gives you the most hands-on time at home, with up to 3 hours per visit.

  • You want a doula at your birth and help afterward: choose Birth + Postpartum.

  • Labor support is your top priority: choose Birth-Focused for the most preparation before the big day.

Not sure yet? That's okay. Our doulas specialize in different kinds of support, so your plan also helps us match you with the right doula. Share what matters most to you in your questionnaire, and your matched doula will talk it through with you during your consult.
